Beethoven Sonata in G Op. 30 No. 3
Brahms Sonata in G Op. 78

In keeping with the Society’s mission to promote all of Beethoven’s music involving the piano, we were treated to a lunchtime recital of two masterpieces of the duo sonata repertoire, Beethoven’s comedic G major Sonata op 30 no 3 (yet with a deeply felt central movement) and Brahms’s glorious op 78 Sonata, also in the key of G major. Two excellent young players, Hungarian-German violinist Susanne Schäffer and Latvian pianist Olga Jegunova, had combined to make a team offering much high quality interpretation and teamwork, even if not all issues of ensemble and balance (in the tricky St James acoustic) had been perfectly solved. The Beethoven took some time to settle, though there was no doubting their alert, vivacious response. They showed a keen responsiveness to articulation and dynamics, even though they could have risked a little more rustic vigour, even roughness, in the Finale.

The G major Sonata is one of Brahms’s most lyrical, personal and deeply felt works. The opening movement – marked Vivace ma non troppo- often suffers from too slow a tempo: not here, the duo found a lovely flowing two-in-a-bar and kept it moving. Beautifully sensitive in the main part of the movement, they could have found a darker colour in the more urgent development section and brought out more of the contrapuntal interplay. In the rich Adagio middle movement, Schäffer found a lovely quietude in her tone and bowing. In general the duo’s interpretation of this cherished masterpiece convinced by its emotional commitment and much telling detail.
